- PREFACE
- PLEASE NOTE: The first time you view any main text, IPJ will be modified
- to prevent distribution of a copy that has been opened. Please make a
- back-up copy of the IPJNEW file and save it, "unopened", for distribution
- -- prior to running IPJ.
-
- When you open a main body of text the first time, you will be asked if
- you want to change the name of the PAD. You may enter a file name of
- your choice--for volume 1, version 1 you might enter "IPJV1V1." If you
- do not rename the file, select <Cancel> -- otherwise you will get an
- error message because the file cannot be renamed "IPJNEW".
-
- If you are reading this on-line in IPJ but have not read a primary body
- of text you may still make a copy for distribution by exiting now (select
- "File, Exit"). For example, in IPJV1V1, there are four main bodies of
- text: "Thirteen Moon Journal", "Life Notebook", "Bicycling and Thoreau"
- and "Under Construction."
-
- To be certain you haven't caused an alteration before making a
- distribution copy, check the Cover for a notice which would appear
- at the top if any main text has been opened, as well as noting the
- name of the file.
-
- This security measure protects you as well as the integrity of IPJ.
- For example, it helps prevent the distribution of any confidential notes
- or inadvertent changes to copyrighted text you may have made. Please
- report any violations to the address provided at "Interact, Registration."
- Thank you for your cooperation.
-
- IPJ is being continually refined, and the documentation is updated, both
- on-line and in the separate text file. Due to the nature of the updating
- process, the two may not be identical, and you may want to read both.
- Please read about Shareware, by selecting "Navigate, Shareware."
-
- DESCRIPTION OF IPJ AND RELATIONSHIP WITH HYPERPAD
- IPJ is both a logical, systematic structure, and a tool and vehicle for
- spontaneous exploration and honest, insightful expression and interaction.
-
- The IPJ concept was designed within the attractive interface and powerful
- features of the authoring system, with the intention of providing for your
- ease of transition from IPJ to HyperPAD.
-
- HyperPAD, a program separate from IPJ, has extensive, excellent
- documentation including a free demo disk and highly acclaimed manuals.
- In addition, HyperPAD is available as shareware.
-
- Because re-writing the HyperPAD documentation would be a redundant and
- needless exercise, the features of IPJ which are identical to HyperPAD's
- are not covered herein. This also trims the IPJ file size, an advantage
- for downloading and distributing the evaluation copy.
-
- Regarding file size, once you have the Browser .EXE and .OVL files, all
- you need to run additional volumes of IPJ is the *.PAD file. Therefore,
- IPJ may be considered a modular system, allowing the user to build upon
- the core files with volumes of personal interest.
-
- To learn more about the features (for example, all but two of the top
- menu bar items) which are part of HyperPAD's domain, you should contact
- Brightbill-Roberts (select Navigate, HyperPAD).
-
- The two top menu bar items which are part of IPJ's domain are Navigate
- and Interact. All of the second row of menu items, from "Text" to the
- right arrow, are a part of the Interactive Personal Journal interface.
- Their use is best learned by selecting each, observing and responding.
-
- IPJ is highly intuitive and instructional. An advanced level of
- proficiency as an IPJ user can be attained without reference to
- documentation, simply by reading the screen and experimenting.
-
- For IPJ on-line readers, if you haven't already visited the "Navigate,
- Using IPJ" section, that stop-over is highly recommended.
-
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
- IBM Personal Computer, Compatible, or IBM PS/2 Series
- 384KB available memory
- DOS 2.1 or higher
- Hard disk recommended
- Use of the Microsoft(R) Mouse is optional
-
- IPJ FILE NAMES
-
- IPJNEW.PAD
- BROWSER.OVL
- BROWSER.EXE
- IPJDOC.TXT
- USINGIPJ.TXT
- SHARWARE.TXT
- IPJNEW.BAT
- IPJV1V1.BAT
-
- The above files, as of this writing, will uncompress to about 500K.
-
- INSTALLATION
- To run IPJ on a hard drive, generally a sub-directory is created, the IPJ
- files copied from a floppy disk into the sub-directory, and (if zipped)
- the primary file is extracted.
-
- OPERATION
- Because IPJ is a concept for a product line that may grow to a large
- number of volumes, the start-up name will be unique to the volume. Two
- batch files have been written to provide for one step start-up; one for
- IPJNEW and the other for the suggested name after you have opened IPJ.
-
- To start IPJV1V1 (Volume 1, Version 1), type IPJV1V1 and enter. To start
- other volumes, use the name of the program file with the .BAT extension.
- You may also start IPJ by typing "Browser <filename>" at the IPJ
- subdirectory.
-
- When you start the IPJ evaluation copy, you will be asked for a password.
- Type in "My Journal" (with space, not in quotes, not case-sensitive).
-
- While some may use IPJ for keeping a personal reference library, preparing
- notes for a paper or speech, research or other purposes, it is primarily
- designed as a journalling tool and vehicle.
-
- For many people, the contents of their journal is confidential. HyperPAD
- has built-in password protection, a feature which transfers well to the
- IPJ concept. Evaluation copies of IPJ are password protected to
- demonstrate that capability for journal-writers.
-
- Registered users are able to personalize or remove the password protection.
- See "Interact, Registration."
-
- METHODS OF EXPLORING IPJ
- CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER
- If you choose a systematic approach to using IPJ, the structure is there:
- you may travel from the Cover to Contents, through preliminaries such as
- Author, Acknowledgments, and Introduction, to the Chapters from first to
- last and finally the Epilogue.
-
- WORD AND THEME
- Using the search and hyperlinking capabilities of HyperPAD, you will be
- able to choose your paths through the text, by key word. Select "KeyWs",
- type the word(s) you want to find and press enter. If the word or phrase
- you seek is in the text, it will be located and highlighted. To go to
- the next occurrence, press enter, and again, and so on.
-
- You can actually "travel" through the entire text within IPJ in this
- manner--a wonderful way to compare text by different authors on a theme,
- find links and gain insights, as well as re-locate a word or phrase
- previously read.
-
- Once you register IPJ, you will be able to select "Tools, Text" and find
- the line number where you are reading. When making notes on text, you
- can include the text "address", a valuable aid in re-locating those
- portions.
-
- The themes that may be explored within IPJ in future volumes will, if
- development goes as planned, be far-ranging. The text of IPJV1V1 is
- primarily centered on the hows and whys of the journalling process,
- from various sources.
-
- The perspective is mostly from a spiritual, Christian viewpoint (with
- the exception, perhaps, of the articles on fitness journalling and
- Thoreau's journal). The IPJ vision is to offer a balance and diversity
- of opinions and belief systems, including some which the IPJ author does
- not accept.
-
- For further understanding of the author's thought processes -- where he
- "is coming from" -- see the portion of the author's journal in "Under
- Construction", which may be accessed from the cover menu of IPJV1V1
- (Navigate, Map). The full text may become available in its entirety.
- For more information, select "Interact, Registration", check the
- appropriate box on the order form, and mail the printed form to the
- address provided.
-
- TIME OR GOAL APPROACH
- The planned design will allow you to select your own pace for completing
- the journalling process through the text, and see a calendar or charts
- of your progress.
-
- WHY AND HOW TO JOURNAL
- For more about why and how you should use the journalling process, read
- the text of "Thirteen Moon Journal" and "Under Construction, the Author's
- Journal", which will be found in IPJV1V1 and some other volumes, by
- selecting "Interact, Catalog".

- COMPRESSING PADS
- [The following is from "HyperPAD 2.0 User's Guide", pages 199-200, (c)
- Copyright Brightbill-Roberts & Company, Ltd. 1990 All rights reserved.]
-
- You may have noticed that the Pad Info dialog box contains a Free Space
- option, which reports the number of bytes of free space within the pad.
- Free space accumulates while you're modifying or creating pads.
-
- As you use your pad, HyperPAD objects change size and empty spaces form
- within the disk file. These spaces are used, resized, and emptied as
- needed while you're working with the pad. In fact, HyperPAD manages
- free space in your pad without your knowing it. However, to conserve
- disk space, HyperPAD gives you the ability to remove all the free space
- in the pad.
-
- To remove the free space in a pad:
-
- 1. Select the Pad Info command from the Objects meny (ALT+O, D) and check
- the free space. (The user level has to be set at least to Painting.)
- [IPJ note: the registered version is set to Painting].
-
- 2. Select Compress from the File menu.
-
- A message indicating the status of the compress is displayed during
- the compression process.
-
- Pad compression requires twice the disk space of the original pad. For
- example, if the size of the pad is 10,000 bytes, to compress the pad you
- will need 10,000 free bytes of space on your disk.
- [End of quote from HyperPAD manual].
-
- MOVING AROUND IPJ
- IPJ inherits the excellent "Point-and-Click" and "Push-Button Computing"
- features of HyperPAD. To make a selection or type in notes, simply use
- the Tab and Enter keys or Mouse button.
-
- The primary IPJ screen uses a "Scrolling" field. The page you are on
- (for those reading this on-line in IPJ) is scrolling. If you Arrow Up
- or Down you will see, when the blinking cursor reaches the top or bottom,
- how new text is exposed to view.
-
- IPJ screens are designed to be attractive and efficient. The top menu
- and bottom status bars are standard on all screens and a standard second
- menu bar at the top is found on most, in order to minimize your learning
- curve.
-
- You may customize the menu colors too! Just select "Interact, Colors",
- use the arrows to see color combination or go to "Examples" and make your
- choice, then "Set" from the "Colors" screen.
-
- "Text" will show a full screen of text. "Notes" will give you a full
- screen for typing in your notes. "T by N" displays text on the left and
- your notepad on the right. "T over N" displays text on the top and your
- notepad on the bottom.
-
- Some pages do not have fields which can be sized. Those have the
- instructions, "Menu bar/arrows to navigate from this screen."
-
- "Go To Pg" brings up a dialog box which asks "Which Page." If you
- choose OK, you'll go to the next page. Or, you can type in any page
- number to go to that screen. Notice the page number in [] in the
- Status Bar below. The arrows are a quick way to toggle forwards
- and backwards.
-
- If you are on-line in IPJ (hard copy won't work), try the selections now!
-
- You can return to this screen by selecting an arrow, "Go To Pg", or
- "Navigate, Documentation" from the menu bar. You can also use the "Go"
- pull-down menu. The methods you use will depend upon what you are trying
- to accomplish and your personal preferences.
-
- The "M" buttons toggle on and off markers along the top of the right side.
- Hidden "L" buttons can be made visible along the lower right side and
- used to create user-defined links from page to page.
-
- In combination with other IPJ features, these enable you to mark pages,
- perform queries to find all markers, make notes on the theme of the
- marked text, gain insights by finding links between bodies of text and
- notes, and so on. Future versions will include examples and ideas for
- making the best use of these capabilities.
-
- You will find information about features which are planned but not
- yet functional under "Navigate, Progress." IPJ is a concept which
- generates excitement in the responsive. You are invited to participate.
